In Scotland in 1858 a dog owner named John Grey passed away. After his memorial service, his terrier dog Bobby would not leave the gravesite and kept vigil beside his master's grave in the churchyard, Greyfriar's Kirk. After days of repeated attempts by the churchyard to remove the dog, Bobby's persistence and loyalty to the curator and townsfolk of his devotion, granted him a home in the church yard. Through all seasons and weather, Bobby only left his master's grave for a short time each day to be fed after the one o'clock salute from the Edinburgh Castle. For 14 years, John's faithful dog kept constant watch and guard over the grave until Bobby's own death in 1872. Greyfriar's Bobby was later commemorated by the creation of the statue and fountain that was unveiled without any ceremony, on November 15, 1873.
